Identity simplified: How the Aadhaar App is rewriting identity verification
Most onboarding flows in India start with uploading and verifying Aadhaar, which is often a cumbersome process. Our latest blog unpacks how the new Aadhaar App lets you redesign the flow end-to-end.
Here’s a familiar situation we all face on our holidays. Just when we reach the hotel reception, we scramble to find and submit our Aadhaar card for verification. Sometimes, we are also a little wary of whether the photocopy will be stored securely. We nevertheless share it and wait to check in. This process takes about 15 minutes for the entire family to check into the hotel.
Most of us use Aadhaar everywhere, but still shuffle between PDFs, photocopies, and OTPs. But now that is poised to change. The new Aadhaar App turns your Aadhaar into a smart, consent-led identity layer that lives on your phone instead of in a plastic card or a crowded inbox.1 It is an instant, online, and secure flow that will remove the hassle of PDFs and paperwork.
What’s the new Aadhaar App about?
The Aadhaar app enables every business to verify credentials, whether it’s hotels, gig platforms, retail stores, or anywhere where proof of identity needs to be submitted. It provides both online and offline verification of digital identity with the user’s informed consent.
Here’s how it works:
Customer downloads the Aadhaar app and verifies credentials
The merchant provides a QR code or an in-app link to redirect to the Aadhaar app
Customer can view the details requested and approve the request
But why do we need the Aadhaar app when there are other verification modes?
Businesses currently have four ways to verify Aadhaar data, with some modes limited to a few entities and often facing friction and high compliance costs:
How does verification through the Aadhaar app work?
Businesses can verify Aadhaar data through an online or offline process, depending on the use case. For instance, offline verification is suitable for hotel check-ins, while online verification is suitable for delivery platforms verifying workers, or lenders verifying potential borrowers.
1. Online verification (via the merchant app)
This verification mode redirects the user from the merchant app to the Aadhaar app. Let’s understand this through an example of a platform worker being verified by a delivery platform:
2. Offline verification via Aadhaar app (using QR code):
This is a key innovation of the app since it verifies credentials without real-time queries to UIDAI’s Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR). This reduces infrastructure load and limits data exposure. Here’s an illustration of the offline flow for a hotel check-in:
Ecosystem benefits from the Aadhaar App
For users, the Aadhaar App streamlines verification and enables explicit user consent. It reduces the hassle of managing PDFs and photocopies. Users also have better control and information on what data is shared, with whom, and for what purpose. Here’s the key user benefits:
Consent-based selective data sharing improves security and privacy
Reduces the time, cost, and effort of sharing physical copies
Enables managing of up to five Aadhaar profiles from an app, improving convenience for dependents and household members
Consolidates access to update services, such as updating the address and mobile number
QR-based contact card enables sharing essential contact details without exposing the Aadhaar number
For businesses, the Aadhaar App lowers compliance costs and helps reduce onboarding friction. Other benefits for businesses include:
Wide scope of application with no licensing requirement
Lower compliance cost with no storage of Aadhaar data, ensuring privacy protection for the users
Enables ease of compliance with the DPDP Act and the latest Aadhaar guidelines for offline verification
Reduced onboarding friction and lower drop-offs
Improves security and compliance, thus building consumer trust
Which sectors would benefit from using the Aadhaar app for verification?
The Aadhaar App enables a wide range of use cases across sectors. Here are some of the key sectors with potential for high uptake of the Aadhaar App for identity verification:
